The label on a perfume bottle shows the concentration of perfume oils, which affects strength, longevity and often price. There is no single official rule for exact percentages, so the figures below are indicative.
- Parfum / Extrait de Parfum: about 20–30% or more; the richest and longest-lasting.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP): about 15–20%; rich, long-wearing, the most popular everyday choice.
- Eau de Toilette (EDT): about 5–15%; lighter and fresher, ideal for daytime and summer.
- Eau de Cologne (EDC): about 2–5%; a quick, light refresh.
Which lasts longer, and is it the same scent?
Generally, the higher the concentration, the longer it lasts, though woody, warm and gourmand notes outlast citrus ones. An EDP and EDT with the same name are often reworked by the house and can smell noticeably different, so try the other version first, for example with a perfume sample.
